Monday again, this morning with the illusion of filling up the Mexican goal. Now within the top 16 teams it is a win or straight flight Johannesburg- Buenos Aires. I have been laden with a lot of work last week, Sunday also saw me typing away furiously on my notebook. We are submitting a proposal to Global Fund for HIV prevention and treatment in Papua New Guinea. If we get that across we will have 11.5 million USD to combat HIV and Tuberculosis in a country that needs it badly.
I was of course intrigued to find out the results of the 1:30 am match between England and Germany. The scales tipping more towards the Deutschand group as they have been super through the tournament. England have played terrible, not only this game, but the previous matches as well and the final results showed it. This morning all the English newspapers swear at the Uruguayan ref for disallowing a perfectly legal goal, but the 4 goals that they ate speak for themselves. So now for the Brits it’s a Bloemfontein- Johannesburg- London flight, home in time for tea and to watch Wimbledon live and the rest of the World Cup (if they want) on TV.
Monday morning sunrise form our balcony.
That game aside, what I wanted to see was the Argentina-Mexico clash. So up at 5:15 and on with the same routine, cappuccino, Argentinean shirt, flags. Stand up for the national anthem which everyone hums because the introduction is too long (and so no one can sing the hymn) and play ball. The first 20 minutes were a bore, then Tevez who was a mile off-side licks one in. The ref calls the goal, hesitates, sees the sideline ref, talks to him, the replay on the big screen shows the offside clearly, but they call it anyway. The Mexican player tried to kill the ref but the goal stood. Nine minutes later the Mexican defense who seemed to have consumed all the tequila of the country worms, included, let the ball go and Hugain puts the second one on the back of the net.Halftime saw morning dawning in the horizon (which merited a photo) a refill of cappuccino with Papua New Guinea expresso, abundant milk froth, chocolate topping and the taste of partial victory on our side.
On the second half Tevez crowned himself as best player of the match as he scored the 3rd and best goal of the WC so far. Tevez is an ex-Boca Junior’s player and he was connected to 480 volts today, a real treat to watch. After that the Argentinean team retracted and defended. A good goal from Mexico followed by a few scares and a picture that Argentina is not a team good at defense. Now we await the clash with the Germans. The game will see me in a hotel room in Fiji, on holidays, crossing fingers that it will not be the last game for us in this which has turned out to be a memorable World Cup.
