Nevertheless there are plenty of activities to do at home. Mathias and Emily went insect hunting. Emily calls the shots and Mathias is the official insect catcher. Mathias also got a haircut.
We treated ourselves to some good food over the weekend. I found a butcher who has some good quality meat and I’m able to prepare some of the Argentinean beef cuts at home. I also experimented with cinnamon rolls and they come out better than I expected, actually quite amazing. Nothing better than a good PNG Sunday coffee with hot cinnamon rolls. While I cooked Gisela and the kids did paper cutting following a Japanese book that a friend of ours lent us. They made butterflies, flowers, snow flakes and many other shapes.
On Sunday morning we worked on our garden. I’m completing our third vegetable bed and the little plants that we have in the nursery are growing quite well. We now also have tomatoes. The orchids we have at home (about 10 bushes) are also starting to flower. Here is a photo of the first plant to flower.
After working hard in the garden and sweating it out we decided to have lunch and cool down in the pool of one of Honiara’s hotels.
Last night everyone was already asleep and I was reading when I heard our little dog (Lik-lik) start barking. She would not stop and kept going and going which is very unusual. I finally got up and went to the little balcony at the back of the house. I saw the dog running around and around. The guards also come to see what was happening and then we saw that the dog had a 2 metre long snake against a corner. The snake kept striking at the dog (bit her twice) The guards killed the snake and luckily confirmed that it was not a poisonous species. I was surprised (and very proud) at this little dog who is no more than 20 cm high, skin and bones and still very slowly recovering from it’s previous hard life on the road. Plus it still has a nasty skin infection which we have been treating for weeks without a lot to show for it, yet she faces this 2 metre snakes which it understood was a threat and not meant to be there. That is one thankful little dog and she will make a great guard dog someday.
