It has been a while since I posted anything. These last two weeks we have had a huge number of visitors to the World Vision Solomon Islands office. Last week we had an intensive Water and Sanitation Workshop with representatives of the 3 countries (PNG, Solomon and Vanuatu) as well as a number of donor partners from Australia and New Zealand. On this workshop we developed the strategic plan for WASH for the next 3 years and had lengthy discussions on lessons learned over the last years of implementation.
This week we received over 50 visitors from 4 support offices and regional representatives for round table meetings (these are held annually) to celebrate the successes achieved this year, review lessons learned and correct shortfalls that were identified. It also allowed us to have lengthy discussions with donors and to show them what the work on the field is all about which gives them a better insight into what we and our field staff are faced with daily. I was able to present on several occasion over these last two weeks. Possibly the most impact came from the presentation of the Baseline results for the Madang Nutrition Project. The results we got out of that study have been quite shocking and we will be implementing an Emergency response for the next 3 months in those villages. Things don’t stop there as I will be traveling to PNG tomorrow with a group of 5 Australian specialists to meet with government officials (I will be having diner on Monday night with the PNG Health Minister) so they are aware of the situation and can become more pro-active in addressing these issues. The baseline findings will be published in the Australian Public Health Journal in the following months, so that gives me another paper as principal author which is great. The advocacy meetings will be followed by a 10 day field visit in Madang to talk with provincial government officials, train our Nutrition and Mother and Child Health teams and visit the 6 communities again to start rolling out the emergency response. So these will be a couple of very busy weeks again.

Mathias has started going to Pikinini School once a week. This follows pleas to go to school which have been ongoing for several months. Lately he had developed this imaginary school with two friends (Jop and Jack) that go to school with him. This is an effort to imitate Emily. So after more nagging and despite being close to the end of the school year he has started going a day a week, and loves it. He is friends with everyone; his English is improving and has a grand time. Pikinini, swimming classes, play group and music group keeps him busy all week.
Emily is also doing great at school. To our surprise this week one of her baby teeth has become loose so she will have the first tooth out in a few days. Amazing how fast time goes, it seems like yesterday that I was cradling her in my arms at 3 am trying the relive her from colic cramps.
