Game 5. Argentina 0 - Germany 4
Sunday morning turned out to be so much different than I expected. I was not able to see the game on TV as the Fijians are not football fans and the cable supplied by the hotel did not have a single channel that showed the game (talk about 5 start accommodation) I listened to the game on an Argentinean radio with a dodgy Internet connection that keep breaking off. Every time I was able to reconnect with the radio we were a goal down.
But that is the way football is, the worse defeat of the Argentinean team since 1974. The Germans filled our goal and our boys are back in Buenos Aires.
I have to give some credit to Maradona who received a lot of criticism before the WC, but despite all (due to a combination of luck and skill) took us to quarter finals. Tevez by far the best placer is the Argentinean squad, a football master.
And so ends another World Cup another defeat on quarter finals by German hands, just like in the last WC (but that was on penalties). Now Brazil 2014.

Game 4. Argentina 3- Mexico 1 (2-1 according to Mexico)
Monday again, this morning with the illusion of filling up the Mexican goal. Now within the top 16 teams it is a win or straight flight Johannesburg- Buenos Aires. I have been laden with a lot of work last week, Sunday also saw me typing away furiously on my notebook. We are submitting a proposal to Global Fund for HIV prevention and treatment in Papua New Guinea. If we get that across we will have 11.5 million USD to combat HIV and Tuberculosis in a country that needs it badly.
I was of course intrigued to find out the results of the 1:30 am match between England and Germany. The scales tipping more towards the Deutschand group as they have been super through the tournament. England have played terrible, not only this game, but the previous matches as well and the final results showed it. This morning all the English newspapers swear at the Uruguayan ref for disallowing a perfectly legal goal, but the 4 goals that they ate speak for themselves. So now for the Brits it’s a Bloemfontein- Johannesburg- London flight, home in time for tea and to watch Wimbledon live and the rest of the World Cup (if they want) on TV.
Halftime saw morning dawning in the horizon (which merited a photo) a refill of cappuccino with Papua New Guinea expresso, abundant milk froth, chocolate topping and the taste of partial victory on our side.
On the second half Tevez crowned himself as best player of the match as he scored the 3rd and best goal of the WC so far. Tevez is an ex-Boca Junior’s player and he was connected to 480 volts today, a real treat to watch. After that the Argentinean team retracted and defended. A good goal from Mexico followed by a few scares and a picture that Argentina is not a team good at defense. Now we await the clash with the Germans. The game will see me in a hotel room in Fiji, on holidays, crossing fingers that it will not be the last game for us in this which has turned out to be a memorable World Cup.

Monday morning sunrise form our balcony.
That game aside, what I wanted to see was the Argentina-Mexico clash. So up at 5:15 and on with the same routine, cappuccino, Argentinean shirt, flags. Stand up for the national anthem which everyone hums because the introduction is too long (and so no one can sing the hymn) and play ball. The first 20 minutes were a bore, then Tevez who was a mile off-side licks one in. The ref calls the goal, hesitates, sees the sideline ref, talks to him, the replay on the big screen shows the offside clearly, but they call it anyway. The Mexican player tried to kill the ref but the goal stood. Nine minutes later the Mexican defense who seemed to have consumed all the tequila of the country worms, included, let the ball go and Hugain puts the second one on the back of the net.Halftime saw morning dawning in the horizon (which merited a photo) a refill of cappuccino with Papua New Guinea expresso, abundant milk froth, chocolate topping and the taste of partial victory on our side.

Argentina 2 - Grecia 0. Game 3
After that went to work and had the congratulation of the 15 or so WV staff who are die hard fans of Argentina. They congratulated me as if I had played. The pastor must be really happy…

The plan for this Wednesday was to fill the Geek goal with goals topped with the expectation that the Argentina-Greece game would be shown live on TV. We have 4 channels here and only onw (the local channel) shows the games. It was not a problem with the previous games as everyone played at different time. Now we never know what game will be shown live and which one will be repeated at a later time.
At 1:30 I woke up wondering what the Cherruas-Tequila Kings were up to. I put on the TV and saw that the Vuvuzela Blowers were playing the Frog eaters live. I turned off and went back to bed. Woke up again at 5:15 hoping, and sure enough as I turned the TV on the Argentinean national item flooded the living room. I fired up the coffee machine, made a cappuccino and settled down (I watch most of the games standing up and running around more than Maradona) The first half was frustrating and I spent time swearing at the Greek players to open up, leave Messi alone and at the ref who seemed to have forgotten his cards at home. The half time break saw me making more coffee and waking Gisela up. Second half with a scare and then Mathias walks into the living room and 30 seconds later Demichelis scores, a few minutes later Palermo with his second. Doubly proud of Palermo because he is from my local team Boca Junior, but maybe even more proud because he is 36 years old, 2 years older than me but still has it.After that went to work and had the congratulation of the 15 or so WV staff who are die hard fans of Argentina. They congratulated me as if I had played. The pastor must be really happy…
Mathias contento, 2 goles como sus años. Mathy happy with 2 goals like his years

Pastor futbolero
God is good –all the time, all the time- God is good”
Aguante el pastor!
This Sabbath we were sitting in church. The Pastor comes up to the pulpit to give the usual welcome speech. He asks the congregation to raise their hands if they are happy and most of the church does. Then he continues saying “I know that there is an Argentinean family in the congregation, please raise your hands” We raised our hands “and they are surely happy with the great victories Argentina has had in this last two games of the World Cup” He sees us with sitting there with our hands raised and waves “Argentina is my adopted team, and yes, yes Lord, we are happy today. God is good- all the time, All the time- God is good!
Go Pastor Go!

Argentina 4- South Korea 1

This photo was taken in the Gateway Mall in Johannesburg by a friend of mine. After living in South Africa for many years I totally support them hosting the WC but stop the vuvuzelas, it drives everyone crazy, seems like the stadium is being attacked by a swarm of mosquitos... On the South Africa- Mexico match the noise levels topped the 130 decibel mark for 2 hours...

Argentina 1- Nigeria 0
Argentina’s debut in the WC found me with both of my kids sick. We were up till after midnight finishing the cake for Emily’s birthday party and baking some other little treats. Emily started throwing up shortly before the game began (on Sunday morning 1:00 am local time) I managed to watch the goal and also auto capture this photo with my little camera of Heinze just seconds after he scores. Most of the first half of the game I missed after another round of nausea and vomiting took me away from the screen to sit with my daughter on the bathroom floor and provide the little comfort a parent can bring to their child when they are being sick on the toilet bowl. After changing sheets, washing the floor, changing pajamas and making sure she was asleep I was free to return to watch the second half, swear at the ref for some sloppy judgments and blow 100 balloons for the party the next day. Today both kids have been feeling great, hopefully the worst of this virus is over.
